VISUAL ARTS

What is Chalk Day
The Rancho Buena Vista’s Spring Arts Festival kicks off with Chalk Day. Teams of four students created chalk art masterpieces emphasizing the illusion of 3D in a 2D format.  This year’s theme, The Magic of the Moment was chosen by the 6th District PTA, and was also the theme for the PTA Reflection’s contest. In appreciation of the PTA’s support of Chalk day, the RBV Art Department chose to honor the PTA theme.

Chalk day has been a ten year Rancho tradition. Most years Ron Juncal and Phyllis Swanson spends an afternoon workshop showing the team captains the finer points of laying down the chalk, blending and creating the illusion of three dimensional space. Participants spend five hours creating their image on the sidewalk. The 150-200 artists participating have been granted permission from their parents and are in good academic standing with their teachers.  Students are responsible for making up missed class work.

The artists range from Art I freshman to IB and AP upper classman who are working in a range of mediums including drawing, painting and 3D Design. Teams have collaborated on their image choices, worked together to create a pounce pattern and put together the necessary supplies for the day. This year’s festival will be stunning!

Art Splash
Each year, the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns proudly presents their festival of the arts, Art Splash, on the day following Chalk Day. Students and their families, the VUSD School Board and Superintendent, area middle schools, and the community are all invited to participate in the celebration of the arts at the Ranch. The chalk art walk will be open for viewing, as well as classroom shows, 3D art in room 327, paintings in room 338, and drawing and painting in room 349, as well as  the IB art showcase in Gallery 216.  There was also a ceramics sale in room 327.  The Spring Concert followed in the evening.

This year, 2012-13, marked the first annual partnership with Vista Teen Hunger Hurts (VTHH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving food insecurity for Vista teens. VTHH has established food pantries at every Vista high school. The Rancho Arts Departments partnered with the Food Pantry on campus in order to generate awareness, bring in donations, and to work toward the goal of VTHH that each campus food bank work toward autonomy.

There is always a need for items such as canned foods, healthy snack items, and personal hygiene products.

RBV Literary Arts-

This year's creative writing class hopes to again develop a magazine Rancho students, staff, parents, and community can be proud of. Involve yourself in the creative culture at RBV by supporting this free publication.

The RBV Chalk Walk & Art Splash Art Show
Chalk Day brings together art students from different classes exhibiting their skills while working on mural size pastel drawings. When the day is done, fifty original and vibrant chalk murals created by 200 students and a staff team will line the student walkway between the Quad and student lot.

The art show displayed along the Chalk walk features a display of student work from all the RBV visual art classes. Student art is displayed for the viewing, showcasing the extraordinary talents of the students in the visual arts department.
"Art Splash at RBV --- the best days of the year!"
